Clover Time How to Get a Grimoire: Tower Rolls, Mana Crystals & Pity
Get your first Grimoire in Clover Time: reach the Grimoire Tower, spend one Mana Crystal per roll, and use the Epic 35, Legendary 70, and Mythical 175 pity thresholds to plan repeat rolls.
Grimoires are rolled at the Grimoire Tower: follow the tower icon on your compass, interact with the rolling spot inside, spend one Mana Crystal, and collect the book that appears after the animation. The game sends you there almost immediately — your first Mana Crystal comes guaranteed from the opening chest chain — and no high level is required to roll.
Where Grimoire rolling happens
The Grimoire Tower is the roll point, and the tutorial walks you straight into it. Launch-day recordings show new players spawning in front of the tower, rolling their first grimoire, and only then being teleported to the first village to start missions.
You don't need directions once you know the marker: the tower icon on your in-game compass marks the grimoire gacha. If you'd rather walk, the route from the normal tower is hard to get wrong — take the path on its left side, follow it all the way to the end, and go straight where the stairs split left and right. Inside, every available grimoire sits on display with its rarity label. Finer directions are on the Grimoire Tower location page.
How to roll your first Grimoire
- Open your starter chests. You spawn with a Normal Chest that guarantees a Medium Chest, and opening the Medium Chest guarantees a Mana Crystal. Asta's tutorial dialogue makes the next step obvious: a crystal of mana on your first day — spin it at the tower. (The item text itself calls it "a shard of pure mana given by the arcanist for unlocking the tower.")
- Travel to the tower using the compass icon or the walking route above.
- Find the rolling spot inside. If the tower door is locked in your session, look for the tutorial NPC nearby — one recorded playthrough receives a key from him and opens the tower first, while others walk straight in — so treat the key as a tutorial step that can appear.
- Spend one Mana Crystal. The interface shows your crystal count and consumes one per roll.
- Watch the roll animation — a short cutscene with grimoires flying overhead, mirroring the anime's grimoire ceremony.
- Collect your Grimoire. The book arrives equipped in your hand or in your inventory, and the glow around it signals the rarity you just pulled.
What one roll costs — and what Spins are not
Every recorded roll consumes exactly one Mana Crystal: players trigger spins while holding 27 crystals and watch a single crystal get spent at the roll point. That cost is observed on screen rather than stated as an official rate, so treat the tower's own interface as the final word if it ever changes.
Don't mix up the currencies, though: Spins are not used at the tower. Spins reroll your race, social class, and traits at the church — the tower only takes Mana Crystals. Those character rerolls are covered on the Clover Time rerolls page.
Mana Crystal sources for repeat rolls
Rolls are random, so the real long game is keeping crystals flowing. Treat collecting them as part of normal progression — the Mana Crystals guide covers the resource in depth, and these are the working routes:
| Route | What you get |
|---|---|
| Crafting | One Mana Crystal from 10 Mana Crystal Fragments plus potatoes at any crafting bench, in about 20 seconds. Recorded runs show five potatoes or one — accounts disagree on the count, so check the recipe at your own bench. |
| Fishing | Mana Crystal Fragments, with the Golden Marlin called out as the standout catch for them. |
| Chests | A chance at crystals or fragments from any chest you open; larger chests draw from better pools. |
| Map spawns | Crystals and fragments spawn on the server over time; the Mana Crystal notifier item pings you when one appears. |
| Codes | Developer codes sometimes include Mana Crystals — the current list lives on the codes page. |
| Index milestones | Discover 5 items for 1 Spin, 40 items for 5 crystals, or 75 items for 15 crystals. |
| Weekly & playtime rewards | Weekly progress and playtime rewards include Mana Crystals, so claim them as they unlock. |
For the crafting route specifically, potatoes are cheap to farm: Haj Bandits around Haj Village drop two apiece, and each map's big spawn crystal has a crafting bench right beside it.
Pity thresholds: Epic 35, Legendary 70, Mythical 175
The tower runs a pity system, displayed right at the roll point: Epic at 35, Legendary at 70, Mythical at 175. The on-screen numbers match written guides, and they should change how you spend — rather than hoping each roll pays off, track your rolls and bank crystals toward the threshold for the rarity you actually want.
Two caveats before a spending session. Exact odds differ per grimoire — the only figure shown on screen in recordings is roughly 1 in 179 for the Mythical Anti-Magic book — so read the display at the tower for the book you're chasing. And nothing documents what happens to the pity counter across rarities or play sessions, so keep your own count instead of assuming it carries over. Clover Time is early access, and economy or gacha updates can move these numbers — worth rechecking after major updates.
Reading your result
The glow color around your new book tells you the rarity before you even inspect it: one recording reads blue as a Rare pull and purple as Epic, while another player calls white Common and watches for the Mythical color. Launch-week recordings show ten distinct grimoires on display across the Epic, Legendary, and Mythical tiers, with Common results also possible on low rolls.
The achievement list confirms the tower is where rare results come from: Mythic Touched (draw a mythic grimoire from the tower, +10% Luck) and Mythic Collector (draw 30 mythic grimoires, +300% Luck and +20% EXP) both key off tower draws. See the full list on the achievements page.
After the roll, test what you got — some attacks suit groups while others shine on single targets — and remember some books keep progressing. Anti-Magic, for example, unlocks an awakening with a whole new move set, but that awakening requires the Devil race (the anti-magic guide covers the setup, and races explains the reroll).
Before you farm a stack of crystals
You can only hold two Grimoires without extra storage: one equipped and one in your bag. Rolling a third forces you to drop one of the two, and dropped books can be lost for good — one player's freshly rolled Legendary fell through the floor and couldn't be recovered. The Robux Grimoire Bag raises capacity to two copies of each grimoire.
So check your slots before a long farming session, keep fragments and potatoes instead of selling everything you pick up, and decide what you're actually rolling for before you spend — the rolls are random, and dumping crystals without a target is the fastest way to walk away with nothing. The upside is that you're never locked into your first book: the tower will always offer another roll.
Once the roll mechanics are second nature, the next decision is which book to chase — the full roster and what each grimoire does is on the Clover Time grimoires page.
