Clover Time Mana Crystals: How to Get Them and Spend Them

How to get Mana Crystals in Clover Time: the guaranteed starter-chest crystal, fragment crafting, bonus sources, and when to spend them at the Grimoire Tower.

Mana Crystals are the fuel for grimoire rolls in Clover Time: you take them to the Grimoire Tower, spend one per roll, and receive a random grimoire. Your first crystal is guaranteed — the normal chest you spawn with contains a medium chest, and the medium chest contains a Mana Crystal. After that, the repeatable route is crafting: 10 Mana Crystal Fragments plus potatoes combine into one whole crystal at any crafting table, with Golden Marlin fishing, chests, map spawns, quests, and codes topping up your supply. This page covers every verified way to get crystals and fragments, and when spending them is actually worth it.

What Mana Crystals are used for

Mana Crystals have exactly one job: rolling grimoires. The crafted item's in-game description reads "a shard of pure mana given by the arcanist for unlocking the tower," and the tower interface shows one Mana Crystal being consumed each time you spin. The roll plays out like this:

  1. Travel to the Grimoire Tower — new characters spawn facing it, and the Finral NPC can teleport you across the map for a fee. If you're lost, the tower location guide pins it down.
  2. Check you're holding at least one Mana Crystal.
  3. Interact with the Grimoire rolling area inside the tower.
  4. Confirm the spend — one Mana Crystal per roll.
  5. Wait out the book-flying animation, then collect the grimoire that appears.

Don't confuse crystals with the game's free spins: the timed spin (every 15 minutes in the Asta world, per one walkthrough) rerolls race, social class, and passives, while a Mana Crystal only ever rerolls grimoires. The rerolls guide breaks down the free-spin side. And if you're standing at the tower unsure how to restock, the Tor Archivist NPC there explains how to obtain more crystals. For the grimoire side of the system in more depth, see how to get a grimoire.

How to get Mana Crystals

Collecting crystals is meant to be part of normal play, not a separate grind — the starter chain guarantees your first, crafting produces as many as you're willing to make, and everything else stacks on top.

Your guaranteed first crystal

  1. Finish the tutorial and spawn at the starting castle area — a normal chest is waiting for you.
  2. Open the normal chest; it guarantees a medium chest.
  3. Open the medium chest; it guarantees a Mana Crystal.
  4. Follow Asta's tutorial dialogue, which tells you to spend that crystal at the tower.

Two first-day playthroughs recorded this exact chain paying out — one pulled a mana crystal from the second starting chest, the other opened a medium chest into "crystal mana" minutes into the game — and both went straight to the tower for their first roll.

Craft crystals from fragments and potatoes

The loop: gather Mana Crystal Fragments, gather potatoes, then combine them at a crafting table. Fragments are half-ingredients — they never roll anything on their own, but ten of them plus potatoes become one whole crystal. An on-camera craft finished in about 20 seconds.

Bench locations: every map's set-spawn crystal has a crafting table to its right, and Hage village keeps a bench near the church. The crafting guide covers bench basics.

One disputed detail: the potato count. A beginner's guide reads the recipe as five potatoes plus 10 crystal mana frags, while a creator crafting on camera counts "10 mana crystal frags and a potato." The 10 fragments are consistent everywhere; for the potatoes, follow what your own bench displays. Either way, don't sell everything you loot — a beginner's guide specifically warns to keep recipe ingredients.

Where each ingredient comes from:

  • Fragments — Golden Marlin fishing. The bench recipe points at fragments and the Golden Marlin is the catch named for them. The recorded route: go to Hage village with a fishing rod and uncommon bait, optionally bring luck-improving potions, fish the nearest river or sea, then return to the crafting table, select materials, and craft until you get crystal mana. No source documents how many fragments one Marlin yields, so just keep the catches coming — the fishing guide has the details.
  • Potatoes — Haj Bandits. The bandits right in front of Hage village's church drop two potatoes each, and some early quests have you gathering them anyway. The quests page lists what's available.

Chests: a supplement, not a farm

Chests can hold whole Mana Crystals, but the players who tested them describe those pulls as "very, very hard." What shows up far more often is fragments and other loot: on camera, a large chest opened into a fragment, a spin, and money rather than a whole crystal, and the chest loot screens list "crystal mana frags" among possible drops. You earn chests constantly from missions and boss kills — a Chain Bandit kill dropped a normal chest — and larger chests carry better reward pools, so open everything you find. Just don't expect chests alone to carry your crystal supply. The chests guide maps where they come from.

Map spawns and the Mana Crystal Notifier

Crystals also spawn out in the world. The Mana Crystal Notifier, a shop item, marks them for its owner — "if any mana crystal spawns on the map, it will show up for me." One caveat before you rely on it: in the recorded runs, the notifier-marked pickups turned out to be fragments ("a fragment, actually, it's not the whole crystal itself"), and another player's two blinking pickups were plain "frag crystal" items. Whether map spawns ever yield whole crystals isn't settled between accounts, but either way the notifier feeds your craft loop with fragments.

Quests, index milestones, and weekly rewards

  • The Asta training mission pays a Mana Crystal for finishing it.
  • The index pays crystals for discovering items: 5 crystals at 40 discoveries and 15 at 75. Claim them from Inventory → Index — they stack alongside spin rewards.
  • The weekly rewards track includes a mana crystal on it.
  • Playtime rewards hand out spins, which serve race and class rerolls rather than crystals.

Codes

The developers also hand out crystals through redeemable codes, but codes rotate in and out, so treat them as a top-up rather than income. Check the current Clover Time codes and redeem whatever is live.

No source compares farming speeds or publishes real drop rates, so be wary of any "fastest method" claim. The craft loop is the dependable core because you control both ingredients; everything else adds on top. Clover Time is also still in active development, so recipe amounts and odds can move after economy updates — what your bench and the tower display outranks any guide, including this one.

When to spend (and when to save)

  • Check the tower's odds display first. Chances differ from grimoire to grimoire, and the tower shows them — one launch-day recording listed Anti-Magic at 1 in 179. Read the board before spending, not after.
  • Save toward pity. The tower displays pity thresholds of Epic 35, Legendary 70, and Mythical 175. Keep track of your rolls instead of expecting a rare pull every time, and hold enough crystals to cover the gap to whichever threshold you're chasing.
  • Redeem codes before farming. It shrinks the number of crystals you need to craft or fish for.
  • Roll only for books you actually want. Ten grimoires are displayed at the tower across epic, legendary, and mythical tiers, and several are strong for farming — aim your crystals instead of spraying them. The grimoires overview covers each one.
  • Mind the two-grimoire cap. You equip one grimoire and keep one more in the bag — two total. Rolling a third forces you to drop one of the two, unless you own the Robux grimoire bag, which holds two copies of each.
  • Know when to stop. After your first grimoire, more crystals only matter for rerolling a different ability or chasing higher rarity — once you land a book you like, it's fine to bank the farming habit for later.

With a pile of crystals and pity in mind, the last question is which book deserves them — the Clover Time grimoires tier list ranks every option so you can stop rolling the moment you hit the one you want.
