Clover Time How to Get Tools: Rake, Axe, Pickaxe & Fishing Rod

How to get the Rake, Axe, Pickaxe and Fishing Rod in Clover Time: every verified giver and route, plus how to start harvesting, woodcutting, mining and fishing.

Every Clover Time gathering tool comes from an early-game NPC or shop, not a random drop. The Rake is a free handout from Lily's potato quest right outside the starting church, the Axe arrives with the lumberjack's firewood quest, the Pickaxe comes from Pip via the menu's quest tracker, and the Fishing Rod is either bought from the girl merchant or crafted at a bench. Here's the whole picture at a glance:

ToolHow to get itWhat it unlocks
RakeFree from Lily when you accept her four-potato quest outside the starting churchHarvesting crops
AxeFree with the lumberjack's collect-firewood questWoodcutting
PickaxeTalk to Pip after tracking his quest through menu → NPC/quest, or pick one up on site at the mining missionMining
Fishing RodBuy from the girl merchant or craft at a crafting benchFishing

One note on versions before the walkthroughs: the footage behind these routes comes largely from beta builds, and quest order shifted between updates — most runs hand you Lily's quest as the very first one after the church, while others open it a little later in the starting chain. The givers themselves stayed the same, so follow the routes below rather than any fixed level gate. This page sticks to getting each tool and starting its activity; the Clover Time tools reference keeps the per-tool stats. It's also worth a quick check of the current Clover Time codes before you start grinding.

How to get the Rake

Leave the starting church and talk to Lily, the sister NPC standing right outside. She asks you to collect four potatoes, and accepting the quest grants the rake on the spot — it comes already equipped, at no cost.

Using it is a single input: walk up to a planted crop and press E. Harvesting takes several presses per plant — three per collect in one run — and only fully grown plants give anything, so don't be surprised when small sprouts yield nothing. Grab the four potatoes (they can drop and roll on the ground nearby) and head back to Lily to complete the quest.

How to get the Axe

The lumberjack hands out an axe with his wood-gathering quest. Take the collect-firewood quest from him and the axe lands in your inventory with it — free, no purchase step. The runs shown ask for five trees' worth of logs.

Chopping works on any tree, or on logs already lying on the ground. Don't let the prompt mislead you: the interact label can read "mine," but it cuts wood all the same. Trees have an HP bar, and in the run shown every hit removed one point of it — bigger trees simply take longer and pay better, since more HP means more dropped logs. Collect the fallen logs quickly, because they disappear if you leave them sitting.

How to get the Pickaxe

The fastest documented route runs through the quest menu:

  1. Open the menu and go to NPC/quest.
  2. Select the Pip entry — it shows up as "Stone of Pip" in one walkthrough's menu.
  3. Follow the marker to the quest location.
  4. Talk to Pip and he hands over the pickaxe, with no cost mentioned.

If you're following the main questline instead, you'll reach a mining mission that keeps a pickaxe on site — interact with it when you arrive and you can start mining right away.

Mining mirrors woodcutting with one twist: the input is E, not the attack click — an easy mistake to make ("I always think it's with a click, but it's with E," as one playthrough puts it). Rocks chip down the same HP-bar way as trees, and the dropped stones vanish fast, so collect them as they fall. The starter mining mission asks for five ores.

How to get the Fishing Rod

This is the only tool with a price tag, and it has two routes:

  • Buy it. The girl merchant near the starting quests keeps fishing rods in her stock. Her inventory re-rolls from time to time — roughly every 20 minutes in the footage — so if there's no rod on the stand when you visit, come back after the refresh.
  • Craft it. The crafting bench lists a fishing rod among its recipes, and crafting draws on the wood and stone your axe and pickaxe gather. The exact recipe isn't shown in the available footage — see the Clover Time crafting guide for how the bench works.

Once you have a rod, fishing runs like this:

  1. Equip the rod.
  2. Press V to select a bait — common bait works.
  3. Wait for the bite.
  4. Click through the simple minigame to reel the catch in.
  5. Sell the fish to the fish-dealer NPC.

The fishing guide covers the full loop in more depth.

What each tool unlocks

Each tool feeds a different part of progression:

  • Rake — harvesting. Garden plots yield potatoes and other crops; potatoes cover the early quests and feed crafting as you go.
  • Axe — woodcutting. Wood feeds the bench's craft lines: fishing rods, glow lights, swords, guns and armor.
  • Pickaxe — mining. Stone and ore go into rods, swords and potions, with more potion recipes unlocking as you level.
  • Fishing Rod — fishing. Fish sell for currency, and the Golden Marlin yields mana crystal fragments — the material behind mana crystals, which power your spins at the grimoire tower.

With all four tools equipped, the next step is putting them to work: the Clover Time gathering guide walks the harvest, woodcutting and mining loop, so your new tools start paying for themselves immediately.
